Workshop: Can pension funds help mobilize housing capital?

This is a dutch speaking event.

At the moment, approximately € 1200 billion is huge in the surplus value of owner-occupied homes in the Netherlands. This workshop is about mobilizing that housing capital. Together we explore the role of pension funds in using this surplus value to make the housing stock more sustainable and to strengthen the financial resilience of households.

Netspar researchers Marike Knoef (Tilburg University), Mauro Mastrogiacomo (DNB), and Casper van Ewijk (UvA) present new research into the state of cashing in equity in the Netherlands, the importance for individual households in their financial life planning, and the role which pension funds and other private investors have enjoyed in the meantime.

During the workshop we can learn from each other how the housing capital can be better used for individual social goals.

Bescherming tegen renterisico, inkomens- en inflatierisico in het nieuwe pensioencontract – Daniel Mantilla Garcia – After-lunch webinar

This paper develops a framework for managing interest-rate conversion risk in the new Dutch pension contract, a collective defined contribution system in which multiple generations share investment risk and protection objectives. We show that a simple return-protection strategy can deliver these targets even under extreme scenarios for the risky portfolio.

Policies that aim to extend working lives can be difficult for older workers who face high job demands, caregiving responsibilities, or health problems. One proposed solution is allowing employees to reduce their working hours in the years before retirement. Using data from 1,241 Dutch employees aged 60–63 over eight years, the study finds that about one quarter planned to reduce their hours and one third eventually did so. The results show that workplace arrangements for reducing work hours play a key role in enabling this transition, especially for employees experiencing high job pressure.
