Big data en data science in het pensioendomein

On Friday, October 5, Netspar will host a meeting on big data and data science. The event will take place at the campus of Leiden University.

The lightning-fast developments in the field of big data and data science have an increasing influence on our daily lives. This also has consequences for the pension sector.

Pension providers are faced with choices about their business model. Should they specialize or rather broaden? What will the competition do? During this meeting, the Netspar project group “Changing role of pension providers as a result of Big Data” will explain which considerations pension providers can use in their strategic planning.

Big Data can be used to increase financial insight and to better align financial products with the situation in which people find themselves. Nitesh Bharosa and Marijn Janssen (TU Delft) explain what information architecture is necessary to give people an integral view of their financial situation.

In order to improve communication with participants and customers, Peter de Goeij (Tilburg University) talks about the possibilities of text analytics and eye-tracking analytics.

Finally, more and more genetic information is available for patients and consumers. Richard Karlsson Linnér (VU) talks about recently started research into the consequences of this information for the self-perceived life expectancy and decisions about saving and insurance. Executive Summary

After this meeting, Marike Knoef (Leiden University) will give her inaugural lecture entitled “Dreaming about a good pension: origami and datascience”. Registration is necessary if you wish to attend this lecture and can be done here: website.

This paper develops a framework for managing interest-rate conversion risk in the new Dutch pension contract, a collective defined contribution system in which multiple generations share investment risk and protection objectives. We show that a simple return-protection strategy can deliver these targets even under extreme scenarios for the risky portfolio.
