How can pension providers adequately reckon with sustainable business models in their investment strategies?
Pension providers face significant challenges in using their stewardship role to support companies in sustainability transitions, while also lacking insight into what these transitions require—including the sustainable business models (SBMs) that might succeed in a sustainable economy. Current practices do not systematically integrate SBM knowledge within the pension sector, and the role of this sector in fostering sustainability remains fragmented in research. Few studies address how pension providers consider, promote, or develop SBMs in their investment decision-making. The research team for this WP will conduct interviews with large multinational corporations, small and medium-sized firms, and sustainable enterprise networks. Confirmed participants include DSM-Firmenich (Director of Investor Relations, Finance Director), Philips (Senior Director Sustainability), Voyex (CEO), and Impact Hub (Director for Netherlands). This WP uses key insights stemming from WP1 (drivers of and barriers in sustainability decisions by individuals) and is closely linked to WP4.1 (engagement with companies by the pension sector).
