In this thesis we investigate the preferences of the dutch elderly with respect to saving for long-term care (LTC) or for a bequest. We handle the identification problem of the intentional bequest by using hypothetical survey questions in which we register the taken saving strategies with respect to these two purposes. We nd that the most important factor in chosing between bequest and LTC is having children or not. Bequest motives are found to be similar across all wealth and income distributions.
