Pension network Netspar nominated for Tilburg Impact Award

Netspar’s Accumulated Knowledge Plays a Vital Role in the New Pension System for Dutch Citizens

The Netspar research network has been nominated for the 2021 Tlburg University Impact Award. The work of this independent pensions think tank has been essential for the new pension system, draft legislation for which was published in 2020. The new pension system being implemented between 2023 and 2027 will affect millions of employees and retirees.

Since 2005, Netspar has been promoting a better understanding of the social and economic impact of pensions, aging, and retirement in the Netherlands. The network conducts independent scientific research and disseminates knowledge through publications, podcasts, events, webinars, and education. It is made up of pension funds, insurers, regulatory agencies, government ministries, and academics from eight Dutch universities.

Netspar researchers participate in working groups assembled by the government and the social partners to convert fundamental insights into cohesive legislation. The network also partners with ministries, trade unions, employers’ organizations, pension funds, and the regulatory authorities AFM and DNB to find common ground for reforming supplemental pensions.

Netspar research provided the information needed to make decisions about such matters as eliminating the expected rate of return and funding requirements. This research also paved the way for a new pension contract with more effective risk sharing between generations and for the allocation of pension savings upon transition.

Klaas Knot, DNB President
“Netspar has played a crucial role these past few years in the discussions about the creation of the Pension Agreement and, more recently, its further development.”

Harmen van Wijnen, ABP Director
“The entire pension industry (and ultimately every pension participant) benefits from the research and publications from Netspar.”

Wouter Koolmees, Minister of Social Affairs and Employment
“Netspar provides answers to pension questions based on the current state of the science, preventing needless polarization and also allowing us to proceed with preparing the laws and regulations.”
