Online After Lunch Taskforce Meeting: “Evaluating policy options to increase labor participation of older workers”

Netspar organizes this online After Lunch Taskforce Meeting for partners and employees of partners. Researchers will outline their latest retirement research and then receive feedback and answer questions. It is just another way we bring science, academics, and professional practice closer together.

In this After Lunch Taskforce Meeting by Tunga Kantarci (Tilburg University) you will learn more about evaluating policy options to increase labor participation of older workers.

Questions and input on this ongoing research are most welcome. This is an English speaking event.

This research is being conducted together with Jim Been (Leiden University), Arthur van Soest (Tilburg University), Daniel van Vuuren (Tilburg University).

Many countries consider policy measures to prolong working lives, such as changing financial incentives for early retirement, increasing the legal retirement age, or encouraging partial retirement instead of full retirement. Using stated preference data, we estimate a structural life-cycle model to analyze how financial incentives for different (partial) retirement plans drive individual’s decisions to (gradually) retire. We then use the model to conduct policy simulations. We analyze how the decisions to retire, work part-time, or work full-time change if, for example, the normal retirement age is increasingly delayed, pension accruals increase, or gradual retirement is encouraged through several versions of the Generatiepact. The results can help pension providers and employers to design part-time work and partial pension options that increase participation and labor supply among older workers.
