Sounding Board Group Meeting III
(Februari 8, 2010)

Overview of the program:

  1. Ed Westerhout started the discussion with a global presentation of the results and suggestions for .
  2. Bart Boon (MinFIN) stated in his presentation that both theme subjects needed further research. Therefore, a next theme application is a good thing.
  3. Michiel Evers (APG) was pleased with the theme's attention for risks in different pension contracts. The problems for self-employed workers need more research, he stated in his presentation. Translation to policy questions is more important to him than ideal models.
  4. Adri Moons (SZW) emphasized the international aspect. Lou Spoor (ACHMEA) stated that more simple solutions work better than complex and the contact with social partners should be more intense. Robert Olieman (SVB) asked to take into account projections of life expectancy. Denmark is a good example.
  5. Ed Westerhout and Jan Bonenkamp presented their research on "The Effects of the Credit Crisis on the Solvency of Dutch Pension Funds and its Economic Consequences". Many of the attendants were interested in the OESO study itself and hoped it would be available soon.

    Overview of the program:

    1. Ed Westerhout gave an introduction and update of the theme's research. More detailed info can be found in the provided scientific report 2008/2009
    2. Roel Beetsma provided a short insight on the research activities at the UvA, and Lex Meijdam gave a similar review of projects running at the UvT
    3. After the short introductions to various theme activities, Thijs Knaap gave a more profound presentation on Risk factors in pension returns
    4. The afternoon program mainly existed out of a discussion on the credit crisis in relation to pension funds. This was done on the basis of three prologues given by Harry ter Rele, Jan Tamerus and Roel Beetsma
    5. At the end of the session Casper van Ewijk launched the idea to bring the 3-year theme research to an end, by publishing a book and orginazing a two-day conference. He gave an overview of the intended contents of the book and sounding board members offered some significant feedback

    The start of the theme was formed with a kick off event/sounding board meeting, with a keynote lecture Pension Funds and Intergenerational Risk Sharing by Henning Bohn, University of California at Santa Barbara, USA.
