Pieter Bouwknegt (NN) appointed as Netspar researcher

Pieter Bouwknegt (Nationale Nederlanden) has been appointed researcher with Netspar from February 2008. This is a part-time position (10%) related to the research theme of Antoon Pelsser (Amsterdam University) Valuation and Risk Management for Insurance Companies and Pension Funds. Together Bouwknegt and Pelsser will, among other things, write a textbook on fair valuation of life insurances. They also want to set up, in cooperation with the Actuarial Institute, a seminar on this subject for on-going education.

Bouwknegt is very enthusiastic: ‘As Head Asset Liability Management & Capital Management of Nationale Nederlanden I have a good idea of the practical issues today’s actuaries are struggling with. In some areas the theory needs further development, but there are also many solutions in the literature for problems you encounter in everyday practice. I hope to contribute to this cross-fertilization between theory and practice.’

‘When working together with Antoon Pelsser, I became interested in modern finance developments in relation to the profession of actuary. The tools that have now been developed in the options world can also be used to analyze insurance contracts. That offers great advantages in risk management. Because of future developments such as Solvency II, it is necessary for the actuary to keep up-to-date with the developments in fair valuation.’
